Annual Festival

FESTIVAL OVERVIEW

2020 is our 30th Anniversary, and while current events are changing the format of our festival, we are just thrilled to celebrate arts and artists with you this year at “Chalk It Up! Around the Town!”  This year our festival will come to life on sidewalks, parking lots and driveways throughout the Greater Sacramento Region on Saturday, Sunday and Monday, September 5 – 7, 2020 (Labor Day Weekend).   Please visit our HOME PAGE for more details!https://chalkitup.org/

With Covid-19 restrictions on public gatherings, the Festival is transforming into Chalk It Up! Around The Town! where our volunteer chalk artists will be dispatched to locations throughout the greater Sacramento region.

What about the music?  In 2020, Chalk It Up! is inviting musicians from all over Sacramento to support our mission by creating concert sets that will become a 3-day Sacramento live music streaming festival from their quarantine locations. Music streams available through ChalkItUp.org and to be announced streaming platforms. So far, we’re happy to announce sets from: Dog Party, Kevin and Allyson Seconds, Kepi, Honyock, Mike Blanchard & the Californios, Ryan Thompson, Gabe Nelson, Seas of Bees and The Light Rays (and more to be announced soon).  For media or band info contact Media@ChalkItUp.org

Each Labor Day Weekend, we turn Fremont Park in downtown Sacramento into an explosion of chalk art masterpieces, live music, public art, and community engagement. Since 1991, the Chalk It Up! festival has turned into a hugely popular regional event that brings over 60,000 people to Fremont Park over the three-day weekend.
The main attraction of the Chalk It Up! festival are the hundreds of sidewalk chalk paintings that are created over the course of the weekend. Supported by our generous Square Sponsors, and brought to life by our talented Volunteer Artists, these squares turn from gray concrete paths to beautiful expressions of artistic vision. These chalk masterpieces are started on the first day of the festival and the public is encouraged to watch their progress throughout the weekend.
Vendors and Food
The Chalk It Up! festival features over 75 arts and craft booths and nearly two dozen food vendors. Experience an amazing array of locally created art, custom jewelry, and clothing. And if you get hungry, Chalk It Up has multiple food trucks and smaller food vendors serving up a wide variety of tasty and healthy food options. The Chalk It Up Beer Garden features many regionally brewed favorites including Track 7, Two Rivers, and Lagunitas beers and ciders.
Performers
Each day of the Chalk It Up! festival also features a variety of musical performers who donate their time to entertain the public and set a lively soundtrack to the festivities.
Festival Activities
All of the interior sidewalks in Fremont Park are open to the public to add their own chalk masterpieces to the festivities by bringing their own chalk or supporting our efforts and purchasing chalk at our merchandise tent.
